Rgt1 in Yeast Glucose Induction Pathway

Yeastsenseglucoseintheirenvironmentandaltergeneexpressiontomatchtheirnutritionalneeds.Inaglucose-richenvironment,glycolysisisactivated,glucosetransportisincreasedandgluconeogenesisrepressedtouseglucosetomakeenergy.Inaglucose-poorenvironmenttheseprocessesareregulatedintheoppositedirection.Rgt1isayeasttranscriptionfactorthathelpstoregulateglucosemetabolism,respondingtoglucoselevelsbyregulatingtranscriptionofgeneslikehexosetransporters(HXT1andHXT2)involvedinglucosemetabolism.Rgt1doesnotitselfdirectlysenseglucoselevelsbutisregulatedbyRgt2andSnf3actingthroughtheSCFubiquitinligasecomplex.TheSCFcomplex,includingGrr1andSkp1,targetsRgt1andotherproteinsfordegradationthroughligationwithubiquitin.TheactivityoftheSCFcomplexanditsABIlitytodegradeRgt1areregulatedbyRgt2andSnf3,glucosetransportersthatalsoactasglucosesensorsonthecellsurfacetoregulatetheactivityoftheSCFcomplexandRgt1.
