4. Surveytheareawhereyouaregoingtodothework.MakesureitisnotalreadyHOT.(IfHOT,decontaminate,andrepeatstep4.)
5. Placeafreshlayerofbenchpaperovertheareawheretheradioactiveworkistobedone.
6. Putasmallplasticbag,withabsorbentinthebottom,inaglassbeaker,andplaceitonthebenchtop,forradioactivewastedisposal.
7. PlaceallradioactivematerialandperformalltheworkbehindLuciteshielding.
8. TheGeigercountermustbeplacednexttoyouonthebenchtopwithineasyreach.ItmustbeturnedON.Anytimeyouaretowalkawayfromyourbenchorhandlenon-radioactivematerial,surveyyourselftomakesurethatyouarenotcontaminated.
9. Takeallprecautionswhenworkingwiththeradioactivematerialtoavoidspillage.(Itisadvisabletoplanyourexperiment{doacoldrun}sothatyouknowexactlywhatneedstobedoneandwherethingsshouldbeplacedwhenyoustarttheactualexperiment.)
10. Makesureallequipmentusedfortheradioactiveworkislabeledwithradioactivetape.(Useonlyequipmentdesignatedforradioactivework{e.g.onlycentrifuges,waterbaths,fumehoods,sinks,etc...designatedforradioactivework})
11. Whenyouaredonewiththeradioactiveexperiment,makesureallyourwasteisdisposedofintheabsorbentfilledbag.Tiethebaganddisposeofitintheappropriateradioisotopecontainer.Documentthedateandamountofradioactivityyoudisposedof,onthelogsheetsonorabovetheradioactivewastecontainer.
12. Allwastemustbethoroughlydefacedorradioactivelabelsremoved,beforebeingthrownintheappropriateradioactivewastecontainers
13. Surveyyourworkareaandmakesureitisnotcontaminated.ReturnGeigercountertodesignatedarea.(BenchtopnexttoHOTroom)
14. Storeallradioactivematerialinappropriatecontainer(Lucitebox{ifnotstoredinHOTroom})andmakesureitisclearlylabeledwithyourname,labname,radioisotopeused,anddateplacedinfridge.
15. Disposeofthebenchtoppaperandglovesintheappropriateradioactivewastecontainer.

DECONTAMINATION

1. NotifyLabRadiationofficerorLabManagerofcontamination.(Theywillascertaintypeofprocedureneededtohandlethespill.Ifitisaminorcontaminationthenfollowthesteps2to4)
2. Dilutedecontaminationsolutionaccordingtoinstructionsonbottle.
3. CleanareawithdecontaminationsolutionandthencheckradiationlevelwithGeigercounter.
4. Repeatstep4untillevelisatbackground.
