GS28, also known as GOS28 (Golgi SNARE of 28kDa), is a 28kDa integral membrane protein that serves as a v-SNARE in the ER (endoplasmic reticulum)-Golgi or intra-Golgi vesicle transport. SNAREs (soluble Nethylmalemide-sensitive fusion attachment protein receptors) are complexes bridging opposing membrane bilayers, which mediate specific membrane fusion in the endomembrane system in the final stage of docking and fusion of vesicular transport. SNAREs on transport vesicles (v-SNARE) interact with SNAREs on the target membrane (t-SNARE) to mediate membrane docking and fusion. GS28 mediates the fusion of coat-protein I (COPI) vesicles at the Golgi complex formed by GS28, the cis-Golgi vesicle receptor syntaxin 5, membrin, the v-SNAREs Rat blocked early in transport 1 (rbet1) and protein transport protein SEC22 (rsec22), and the vesicle trafficking protein (rsly1).
