The keratinocyte is the major cell type of the epidermis, making up about 90% of epidermal cells. Human Epidermal Keratinocytes (HEK) perform a barrier function in the skin and mouth, protecting against invasion of bacteria and foreign particles. They also keratinize, producing a hard collagen shell. HEK is a suitable in vitro model for dermal toxicology tests in screening new skin products and for developing dermal skin substitutes. HEK has been used in numerous applications, including investigations of human epidermal development, differentiation, and cellular aspects of skin diseases.
