The SARS-CoV-2 transmembrane spike glycoprotein (S Protein) forms homotrimers that protrude from the Coronavirus surface and mediates the entry of Coronavirus into host cells.  The RBD or receptor binding domain of the S1 subunit mediates binding to the host cell by recognizing host cell receptors, one of which has recently been identified as ACE2.
