Description
ArtesunateisasesquiterpenelactonederivedfromArtemisia.Artesunateexhibitsanticancerchemotherapeutic,antiviral,anti-angiogenic,andanti-parasiticactivities.Artemisininssuchasartesunatearebestknownfortheirantimalarialactivity.ArtesunateinducesG0/G1phasecellcyclearrest,increaseslevelsofBaxandcaspase3,anddecreaseslevelsofBcl-2,inhibitingtumorgrowthinanimalmodelsofbreastcancer.Inmodelsofcervicalcancer,artesunateinhibitsproductionofprostaglandinE2(PGE2)anddecreasesthenumberofTregcells,alsoinhibitingtumorgrowth.ArtesunateinducescellcyclearrestandinhibitsreplicationofPolyomavirusaswell.Additionally,thiscompoundinhibitsneovascularizationandinflammationincorneas,increasingtheBax/Bcl-2ratioandROSlevels,decreasingthemitochondrialmembranepotential,andactivatingp38MAPK.
