Background
LivinAntibody:Apoptosis,orprogrammedcelldeath,isrelatedtomanydiseases,suchascancer.ApoptosisistriggeredbyavarietyofstimuliincludingmembersintheTNFfamilyandpreventedbytheinhibitorofapoptosis(IAP)proteins.IAPproteinsformaconservedgenefamilythatbindstoandinhibitscelldeathproteases.AnovelmemberintheIAPproteinfamilywasrecentlyidentifiedanddesignatedLivinandKIAPforkidneyIAP.Livin/XIAPcontainsasinglebaculoviralIAPrepeat(BIR)domainandaRINGfingerdomainandhastwoisoformstermedLivin-alphaandLivin-beta.TransfectionofLivinincellsresultedinprotectionfromapoptosisinducedbyFADD,BAX,RIP,RIP3andDR6.Livinhasdirectinteractionwithseveralcaspasesincludingcaspase-3,-7,and-9.Livininhibitstheactivationofcaspase-9inducedbyApaf-1,cytochromec,anddATP.ThetwoisoformsofLivinappeartohavedifferentfunctionsandtissuedistributions.
