Aldh3A1isamemberofthealdehydedehydrogenasesuperfamily,agroupofNAD(P)(+)-dependentenzymesthatcatalyzetheoxidationofawidespectrumofaliphaticandaromaticaldehydes.Aldh3A1ishighlyexpressedinstomachandevenmorestronglyincornea,representingbetween5to50%ofthewatersolubleproteinfractioninmammaliancorneas.ItisthoughtthatAldh3A1actstoprotectthecorneafromUV-inducedoxidativestressbynotonlydetoxificationofreactivealdehydesbyalsothroughthedirectabsorbtionofUVenergy.However,corneasfromAldh3A1-nullmiceareindistinguishablefromthosefromwild-typemice;micelackingbothAldh3A1andAldh1A1showedincreasedcataractformationfollowingUVBexposure,suggestingthatAldh1A1maybeabletocompensateforthelossofAldh3A1.
