Background
Ubiquitin-likeproteinsfallintotwoclasses:thefirstclass,ubiquitin-likemodifiers(UBLs)functionasmodifiersinamanneranalogoustothatofubiquitin. ExamplesofUBLsareSUMO,Rub1(alsocalledNedd8),Apg8andApg12. Proteinsofthesecondclassincludeparkin,RAD23andDSK2,aredesignatedubiquitin-domainproteins(UDPs). Theseproteinscontaindomainsthatarerelatedtoubiquitinbutareotherwiseunrelatedtoeachother. IncontrasttoUBLs,UDPsarenotconjugatedtootherproteins. Inyeast,autophagy,thedeliveryofcytoplasmiccomponentstothelysosome/vacuolefordegradation,requiresaubiquitin-likeproteinconjugationsystem,inwhichApg12iscovalentlyboundtoApg12-Apg5andApg16.
