Description
IL-1βisaproinflammatorycytokineproducedinavarietyofcells,includingmonocytes,tissuemacrophages,keratinocytes,andotherepithelialcells.BothIL-1αandIL-1βbindtothesamereceptorandhavesimilar,ifnotidentical,BIOLOGicalproperties.ThesecytokineshaveabroadrangeofactivitiesincludingthestimulationofthymocyteproliferationbyinducingIL-2 release,B-cellmaturationandproliferation,mitogenicFGF-likeactivity,andthereleaseofprostaglandinandCollagenasefromsynovialcells.However,whereasIL-1βisasecretedcytokine,IL-1αispredominantlyacell-associatedcytokine.RecombinantMurineIL-1βisa17.5 kDaproteincontaining153 aminoacidresidues.
