Progranulin(PGRN)isawidelyexpressedpluripotentgrowthfactorwhichplaysaroleinprocessessuchasdevelopment,woundrepairandinflammationbyactivatingsignalingcascadesthatcontrolcellcycleprogressionandcellmotility.Itsfunctioninthecentralnervoussystemisofinterest,asmutationsinthePGRNgenewerefoundincasesoffrontotemporaldegeneration(FTLD).Inaddition,PGRNhasalsobeenlinkedtotumOrigenesis.Newcutting-edgepublicationshaveshownthatprogranulinmightbeabioMarkernotonlyforFTLD,butalsoforothertypesofAlzheimer‘sdisease(AD).ThisnewdataevensupposesthepotentialofprogranulintobeabiomarkerforMCI(MildCognitiveImpairment),whichwouldbeahallmarkinADresearch.Additionally,PGRNisdescribedasanewligandofTNFreceptorsandapotentialtherapeuticagainstinflammatorydiseaselikearthritis.
