Luciferinisacommonbioluminescentreporterusedforinvivoimagingoftheexpressionofluciferase.ThiswatersolublesubstrateforthefireflyluciferaseenzymeutilizesATPandMg2+ascofactorstoemitacharacteristicyellow-greenemissioninthepresenceofoxygen,whichshiftstoredlightinvivoat37°C.ThroughtheutilizationofATP,thereactioncanbefurtherusedtoindicatethepresenceofenergyorlifeinordertofunctionasalife-deathstain.

Luciferinisacommonreagentusedthroughoutthebiotechnologyfieldandspecificallyforinvivoimaging.Luciferaselabeledtumorcells,stemcellsorinfectiousdiseasesareofteninoculatedintoresearchanimalssuchasratsormiceforinvestigation.Theinjectionofluciferinallowsforthereal-time,noninvasivemonitoringofdiseaseprogressionand/ordrugefficacyinthesemodelsystemsthroughBioluminescenceImaging(BLI).

Luciferinisalsocommonlyusedforinvitroresearch,includingluciferaseandATPassays,genereporterassays,highthroughputsequencingandvariouscontaminationassays.
