BACKGROUND

Chlamydiatrachomatisisagram-negativebacteriumthatinfectsthecolumnarepitheliumofthecervix,urethra,andrectum,aswellasnongenitalsitessuchasthelungsandeyes.ThebacteriumisthecauseofthemostfrequentlyreportedsexuallytransmitteddiseaseintheUnitedStates,whichisresponsIBLeformorethan1millioninfectionsannually.Mostpersonswiththisinfectionareasymptomatic.Untreatedinfectioncanresultinseriouscomplicationssuchaspelvicinflammatorydisease,infertility,andectopicpregnancyinwomen,andepididymitisandorchitisinmen.
