ThegeneencodingBcl-3wasfirstidentifiedasthegenealteredinsomecasesofchronicBcelllymphocyticleukemiaandwaslaterfoundtobelongtotheIκBsubfamilyofinhibitorsofNFκBtranscriptionfactors.Bcl-3doesnothaveDNA-bindingactivity,butitinteractswithNFκB1andNFκB2which,whenboundtoDNA,repressgenetranscription.Therefore,Bcl-3maypromotegeneexpressionthatisrepressedbymembersoftheNFκBfamily.Bcl-3RNAishighlyexpressedinspleenandliverwithlowerlevelsofexpressioninheart,skeletalmuscle,lung,kidney,andtestes.
