CTK-19isamemberofthekeratinfamily.ThekeratinsareintermediatefilamentproteinsresponsIBLeforthestructuralintegrityofepithelialcellsandaresuBDividedintocytokeratinsandhairkeratins.ThetypeIcytokeratinsconsistofacidicproteinswhicharearrangedinpairsofheterotypickeratinchains.Unlikeitsrelatedfamilymembers,thissmallestknownacidiccytokeratinisnotpairedwithabasiccytokeratininepithelialcells.Itisspecificallyexpressedintheperiderm,thetransientlysuperficiallayerthatenvelopesthedevelopingepidermis.ThetypeIcytokeratinsareclusteredinaregionofchromosome17q12-q21.
