Introduction

Glucagonisanimportanthormoneinvolvedincarbohydratemetabolism.Thehormoneissynthesizedandsecretedfromalphacells(a-cells)oftheisletsofLangerhans,whicharelocatedintheendocrineportionofthepancreas.Glucagonisreleasedwhentheglucoselevelinthebloodislow(hypoglycemia),causingthelivertoconvertstoredglycogenintoglucoseandreleaseitintothebloodstream.Theactionofglucagonisthusoppositetothatofinsulin,whichinstructsthebody"scellstotakeinglucosefromthebloodintimesofsatiation.
Glucagonisbeneficialforthecultureofsomecelltypes.Ithasbeenusedinsomebiochemicalregulationstudiesofglycogenolysisinhepatocytes.IthasbeenalsobeenfoundtoinduceDNAreplicationinprimaryculturesofadultrathepatocyteswhenusedincombinationswithEGFandInsulin.Glucagonincreasesthebloodglucoseconcentrationbypromotingrapidbreakdownofliverglycogen,andalsoactstorelaxsmoothmusclesuchasthegastrointestinaltract.
