Epidermalgrowthfactorhasaprofoundeffectonthedifferentiationofspecificcellsinvivoandisapotentmitogenicfactorforavarietyofculturedcellsofbothectodermalandmesodermalorigin.TheEGFprecursorisbelievedtoexistasamembrane-boundmoleculewhichisproteolyticallycleavedtogeneratethe53-aminoacidpeptidehormonethatstimulatescellstodivide.EGFstimulatesthegrowthofvariousepidermalandepithelialtissuesinvivoandinvitroandofsomefibroblastsincellculture.
