AwidevarietyofbiologicaleffectshavebeenascribedtoEGFandothermembersoftheEGFfamily.ThebestdocumentedactivityofEGFisitsABIlitytopromoteproliferationanddifferentiationofmesenchymalandepithelialcells.EGFisamitogenforfibroblasts,epithelialandendothelialcells,andpromotescolonyformationofepidermalcellsinculture.EGFinducesepithelialdevelopment,promotesangiogenesis,andinhibitsgastricacidsecretion.
