Visinin-likeprotein1(VSNL1)isasmallCalciumbindingproteinwhichisveryabundantinthenervoussystemandisfoundonlyinneurons,thoughdifferentneuronshavedifferentlevelsofexpression(4,5).ItisparticularlyconcentratedincerebellarPurkinjecells,andtendstobemostabundantinperikaryaanddendrites.Theproteinwasdiscoveredindependentlybyseveralgroupsandisthereforealsosometimesknownashippocalcin-likeprotein3,HLP3,HPCAL3,HUVISL1,VLP-1,VILIPandVILIP-1.TheproteinbelongstothelargesuperfamlyofcalmodulinandparavalbumintypeproteinswhichfunctionbybindingCalciumions.Calciumbindingalterstheconfomationoftheseproteinsandallowthemtointeractwithotherbindingpartners,thepropertiesofwhichtheymayalter.Visinin-likeprotein1hasfour"EFhand"domains,whicharenegativelychargedhelix-turn-helixpeptideswhichareresponsIBLeforCalciumbinding.Visinin-likeprotein1is191aminoacidsinsizeandhasamolecularweightonSDS-PAGEof22kDa.
