5-Hydroxyindoleaceticacid(5-HIAA)isthemainmetaboliteofSEROtonin.Inchemicalanalysisofurinesamples,5-HIAAisusedtodetermineserotoninlevelsinthebody.

Since5-HIAAisametaboliteofserotonin,testingismostfrequentlyperformedforthediagnosisofcarcinoidtumorsoftheenterochromaffincellsofthesmallintestine,whichreleaselargeamountsofserotonin.ElevatedserotoninisoneofthemostcommonBIOLOGicalfindingsinautismand5-HIAAmaybeelevatedinpatientswithautisticspectrumdisorders.
