Lipopolysaccharides(LPS),alsoknownaslipoglyansandendotoxins,arelargemoleculesconsistingofalipidandapolysaccharidecomposedofO-antigenmoutercoreandinnercorejoinedbyacovalentbond.TheyarefoundintheoutermembraneofGram-negativebacteriaandelicitstrongimmuneresponsesinnormalmammaliancells.LPSfromE.coliisparticularlypotentinsystemicinflammationandhavelongbeenrecongnizedasakeyfactorinsepticshockandalsousedinresearchtoinducesynthesisandsecretionofgrowthpromotingfactorssuchasinterleukins. 

MDBiosciencesprovideslyophilizedlipopolysaccharide(LPS)forinvivoandinvitrouse.TheLPSisisolatedfromEscherichiacolibyamodificationofthephenolextractionmethodofWestphalandJann.ThismaterialhasbeenextractedfrombacterialcellswallsofE.coli055:B5.Theendotoxinhasbeenfutherpurifiedtoremovetracesofresidualproteinandnucleicacids,producinghighlypurifiedLPS.TheLPSisessentiallyfreeofnucleicacidandproteinandischemicallycharacterizedwithrespecttotheirphosphateandKDO(2-keto-3-deoxyoctonate)contents.ThehighlypurifiedLPShasbeenthenre-extractedbythemethodofMantheyandVogeltoeliminateresidualproteincontamination.
