Descriptionp75NTRwasoriginallydiscoveredasalowaffinitynervegrowthfactorreceptor.Lateritwasfoundthatitwasthereceptorforallneurotrophins.Itmediatessignalsofneurotrophinsforneuronalsurvival,apoptosis,neuriteoutgrowthandsynapticplasticity.Recently,ithasbeenrevealedthatp75NTRnotonlyactsasthereceptorforneurotrophinsbutalsothereceptorformanyotherpathologicalligandssuchasprions,rABIesvirusandamyloidbeta.p75NTRalsoactsasaco-receptorforNOGOwhichmediatesinhibitorysignalsofmyelinassociatedprotein.p75NTRishighlyexpressedinanumberofnon-neuronalandneuronalcellsincludingmotorneuronsduringdevelopmentandalsoindamagedneurons.FUNCTION:LowaffinityreceptorwhichcanbindtoNGF,BDNF,NT-3,andNT-4.Canmediatecellsurvivalaswellascelldeathofneuralcells.SUBUNIT:Homodimer;disulfide-linked.Interactswithp75NTR-associatedcelldeathexecutor.
