| Description | GAP43isveryabundantproteinwhichisfoundconcentratedinneurons.Onegroupdiscovereditasoneofthreeproteinswhichbecomesunregulatedduringtheregenerationofthetoadopticnerve(1).ThreeGAPs(Growthassociatedproteins)werediscovered,andthenumber43comesfromtheapparentSDS-PAGEmolecularweightoftheonenamedGAP43.TheHGNCnameforthisproteinis,notsurprisingly,GAP43.LaterworkshowedthatGAP43doesnotrunonSDS-PAGEinafashionwhichaccuratelyreflectsitsmolecularweight,andthatGAP43proteinsfromdifferentspeciesmayrunatdifferentapparentmolecularweights.PartlyduetothesefeaturesGAP43wereindependentlydiscoveredbyseveraldifferentgroupsandthereforehasseveralalternatenames,suchasproteinF1,pp46,neuromodulin,neuralphosphoproteinB-50andcalmodulin-bindingproteinP-57.IneachcasethenumberreflectstheapparentSDS-PAGEmolecularweight,andunderlinestheunusualpropertiesofthismolecule.MammalianGAP43proteinscontainsonly226-243aminoacids,andsotherealmolecularweightis23.61-25.14kDa.GAP43hasbeenextensivelystudiedandisknowntobeamajorproteinkinaseCsubstrateandtobindcalmodulinavidly.GAP43isanchoredtotheplasmamembranebypalmitoylationmodifications. |
