Background:
Folliclestimulatinghormone(FSH)isahormonesynthesisedandsecretedbygonadotropesintheanteriorpituitarygland.FSHandLHactsynergisticallyinreproduction.Inwomen,intheovary,FSHstimulatesthegrowthofimmatureGraafianfolliclestomaturation.Asthefolliclegrowsitreleasesinhibin,whichshutsofftheFSHproduction.Inmen,FSHenhancestheproductionofandrogen-bindingproteinbytheSertolicellsofthetestesandiscriticalforspermatogenesis.Inbothmalesandfemales,FSHstimulatesthematurationofgermcells.Infemales,FSHinitiatesfolliculargrowth,specificallyaffectinggranulosacells.WiththeconcomitantriseininhibinB,FSHlevelsthendeclineinthelatefollicularphase.Thisseemstobecriticalinselectingonlythemostadvancedfollicletoproceedtoovulation.Attheendofthelutealphase,thereisaslightriseinFSHthatseemstobeofimportancetostartthenextovulatorycycle.LikeitspartnerLH,FSHreleaseatthepituitaryglandiscontrolledbypulsesofgonadotropin-releasinghormone(GnRH).Thosepulses,inturn,aresubjecttotheestrogenfeed-backfromthegonads.
