Livercancerishighlyaggressiveanddevastatingdiseasethatfeaturesseveralmaincharacteristics,includingahighrateofrecurrence,lowearlydetectionrateandineffectivetreatmentapproaches.Inadditiontobeingthefifthcommonmalignancy,itisconsideredthesecondprimarycauseofcancer-relatedmortalitiesworldwide,asstatedbyOncotarget,publishedinJuly2015.TheHepG2hepatomacelllineisimportantforthetoxicologicalassessmentofnovelcombinatorialdrugs.HepG2wasderivedfromthelivertissueofa15-year-oldmalewithdifferentiatedhepatocellularcarcinoma.Thesecellsareepithelialandhaveamodelchromosomenumberof55.HepG2cellssecreteavarietyofmajorplasmaproteins,includingalbumin,transferrin,alpha1-antitrypsin,alpha2-macroglobulin,andplasminogen(theyhavebeengrownsuccessfullyinlarge-scalecultivationsystems).Thecellsareresponsivetostimulationwithhumangrowthhormone.HepG2cellshavealsobeenshowntoberesistanttoG418.HepG2cellsandtheirderivativesareusedasamodelsystemforstudiesoflivermetabolismandtoxicityofxenobiotics,antigenotoxicandcogenotoxicagents,understandinghepatocarcinogenesis,thedetectionofcytoprotective,andfordrugtargetingstudies.Also,HepG2cellsarecommonlyemployedintrialswithbio-artificialliverdevices.Thiscelllineiswidelyusedinhumancancerresearchoftheliverandisessentialformanydifferenttypesofbiomedicalresearch.AltogenBiosystemsoffershighlyefficienttransfectionreagentkitsfortheHepG2hepatomacellline.
