Carcinoembryonic Antigen is a fetal protein found in the liver, intestine and pancreas, where levels fall following birth. Raised levels are seen in patients with cancer of the digestive tract or certain non-malignant conditions especially; hepatitis, cirrhosis, pancreatitis and Crohns disease. Smokers also have raised levels.
