| Description | Microtubulesare25nmdiameterproteinrodsfoundinmostkindsofeukaryoticcells.Theyarepolymerizedfromadimericsubunitmadeofone"a"subunitandone"b"tubulinsubunit.Microtubulesareassociatedwithafamilyofproteinscalledmicrotubuleassociatedproteins(MAPs),whichincludestheproteint(tau)andagroupofproteinsreferredtoasMAP1,MAP2,MAP3,MAP4andMAP5.MAP2ismadeupoftwo~280kDaapparentmolecularweightbandsreferredtoasMAP2aandMAP2b.Athirdlowermolecularweightform,usuallycalledMAP2c,correspondstoapairofproteinbandsrunningat~70kDaonSDS-PAGEgels.AlltheseMAP2formsarederivedfromasinglegenebyalternatetranscription,andallshareaC-terminalsequencewhichincludeseitherthreeorfourmicrotubulebindingpeptidesequences,whichareverysimilartothosefoundintherelatedmicrotubulebindingproteint(tau).MAP2isoformsareexpressedonlyinneuronalcellsandspecificallyintheperikaryaanddendritesofthesecells.AntibodiestoMAP2arethereforeexcellentMarkersonneuronalcells,theirperikaryaandneuronaldendrites. |
