ArteriovenousMalformation(AVM)istheabnormalandirregularformationofbloodvesselsbetweenarteriesandveinsthatbypassthecapillarysystem.Theseabnormalvesselscanformatangle,ornidusanywhereinthebody,butbecomeparticularlydangerousifthetanglesforminthebrainorspinalcord.Theabnormalnatureofthearteriovenousconnectionscausesahighpressurenetworktobedirectlyconnectedtothelowpressurevenoussystem.Withnopressurediffusionofferedbycapillaries,thisputsahighamountofstressonthebloodvessels.Thesefragilestructurescancausepotentiallyfatalbleedssuchasbrainhaemorrhagesiftheybecomedamagedorfail.ThecausaloriginofAVMiswidelydebated,butitisbelievedtobeamultifactorialdiseasethathasageneticlink.
